Ellington Man Honored as Revs Hero of the Match
Stephen Schirra was recognized for his charitable work for soccer.

The New England Revolution honored Stephen Schirra, of Ellington as the Hero of the Match at the team’s Aug. 9 home game against the Chicago Fire during the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
He is the founder of the non-profit organization “Around the Worlds, Around the World," an organization founded to bring the game of soccer to underserved children.
Schirra was recognized for sharing his passion for soccer with underprivileged children and through incredible photos on social media during a pregame ceremony. He had a sideline view of the Revs pregame warmups and enjoyed the game from the Putnam Club.

Throughout the past six months, Schirra has worked with more than 2,200 children from seven different countries and has given out 870 soccer balls to give these kids the equipment to play and find success in the sport.
Major League Soccer recognized Schirra’s work as he was named the official MLS WORKS Community MVP for this 2016 season and won $10,000 for his non-profit organization during the MLS All Star Game in San Jose on July 28.

The Revs’ Hero of the Match program honors a local first-responder, member of the armed forces or individual making a difference in the community at each home game during the 2016 season.
