Ellington, Somers Boys' Soccer Teams Bring Home Championships (Video)

Ellington claims Class M title, Somers shares Class S crown.

Both the Ellington and Somers boys’ soccer teams brought home state championships Saturday, albeit in different ways — Ellington won its title outright while Somers shared its crown with East Hampton following a double-overtime scoreless deadlock.

It was the fifth overall state title for both programs. It was the second co-championship for Somers and Ellington’s first title since 2008. The Knights were runners-up to Suffield in last year’s championship game.

Ellington’s Eric Amundarain scored the lone goal of the game in the Knights’ Class M championship victory over Tolland at Rosek-Skubel Stadium at Middletown High School.

Amundarain scored with 11 minutes, 29 seconds to play off an assist from Alex Domingos.

“I will remember that goal until the day I die,” Amundarain told Jim Bransfield of GameTimeCT.com.

Ellington coach Roy Gurnon told the Hartford Courant that Tolland was very difficult to break down and that his team didn’t “string enough passes together to hold the ball very much. But in the long run, a terrific play by (Domingos) to get the ball out to Amundarain and that’s a great goal. That’s a great goal.”

Ellington, the tournament’s eighth seed, finished with a 16-3-2 record.

The Class S championship game was filled with penalties and top-seeded Somers (15-2-3) was forced to play down a man when Nicholas Murzda received his second yellow card with 10:25 left in the second overtime.

Somers coach Rick Kelley was not pleased with the call, telling Derek Turner of GameTimeCT, “I was exceptionally disappointed with the decisions the folks in the middle made. We’re fortunate from the regard that a discretionary and questionable call didn’t change the result.”

And while the team didn’t set out to share a title, Kelley told the Hartford Courant that it’s “better than a loss. I think we played well, we just didn’t prove it on the scoreboard.”
