Ellington, Somers Runners Capture Wins at NCCC Cross Country Championships

Individuals from Ellington and Somers won the two varsity races, while the Knight boys captured the team title.

Scholastic runners from Ellington and Somers experienced the thrill of victory in the North Central Connecticut Conference cross country championships Saturday at Windsor Locks High School.

David Clavet and Thomas Arbeiter finished first and second in the boys’ race, leading Ellington to the team championship. The Knights recorded 48 points to easily outdistance runnerup Bolton.

Kyle Fitzgerald placed ninth for Ellington, while Dan Meaney (16th) and William Broding (20th) also had top 20 finishes.

Clavet, Arbeiter and Fitzgerald all made the All-NCCC team, an honor earned by the first 15 finishers. Cameron Scott of Somers also made the team, thanks to his 12th place effort.

On the girls’ side, Ava Roche of Somers led wire-to-wire to win the individual title, covering the 3.1 mile course in 19:31 to beat runnerup Emily Briggs of Canton by 16 seconds.

The Ellington girls took third place, with Lia Guerette and Anna Chamberland earning All-NCCC accolades by finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. Jenni Giacalone (19th) and Allison Hill (20th) also placed in the top 20 for the Knights.
