Ellington, Somers Squads Qualify for Postseason Play

Three Knight teams and two Spartan clubs have already punched their tickets to the state tournament, and one more is lurking.

It promises to be a busy fall postseason for Ellington and Somers high schools, with five teams having already qualified for state tournament competition and a sixth on the verge of making the state playoffs.

Three Ellington teams are guaranteed state tournament berths, led by girls volleyball with a 12-5 record, good for sixth place in Class M through Wednesday.

Also in Class M, girls soccer (11-4) is currently tied for 12th, while boys soccer, the defending state champions, is tied for 17th (7-4-4).

Ellington football (5-1) is ranked seventh in Class S; the Knights have four regular season games remaining, three against teams that are winless.

At Somers, both soccer teams will be competing in the Class S tournament. The boys, the defending co-champions, are currently 13th (8-5-1), while the girls are tied for 19th (6-6-2).

State tournament action begins in early November, with championship games slated for Nov. 21.
