First Day of Kindergarten?

Here are some suggestions to help you and your child get ready for the big day:

1. Show your child that you are excited about the first day of kindergarten. Many parents have mixed feelings about this transition. Save your worries and maybe a bit of sadness to share only with other adults. Your enthusiasm and curiosity will help your child feel that way too.

2. You may want to try playing "school" together - practice - in a fun way -  saying goodbye, asking child to follow directions that might be given in the classroom, saying hello to a new friend, and greeting each other at the end of the day. Dramatic play can ease worries and help your child be ready for new experiences - but be sure it is fun, not prescriptive!

3. Listen carefully to your child's thoughts and feelings about school. Refrain from trying to change them - just start by understanding your child's emotions and point of view. If your child has some misunderstandings, offer new information.
