Gas Station/Convenience Store Endorsed for Busy Somers Intersection
Zoning officials demanded some modification to the Main Street site plan before Monday's vote.

SOMERS, CT — The Somers Zoning Commission on Monday unanimously approved a proposal to construct a Henny Penny gas station and convenience store at the old Bank of America Building at the intersection of Main Street (state Route 190) and Springfield Road (Route 83), but only if certain modifications were included, according to officials and the meeting minutes.
The plan was submitted by Waterford-based Hendels Inc., which has a commitment from Henny Penny, records indicate.
The footprint is proposed at 4,000-square-foot for the convenience store portion of the business, plus the fueling area. The building is proposed at 91-by-44 feet, according to the minutes.

The former bank site's location at has drawn criticism from some residents who say traffic is already bad enough at 595 Main St. The branch closed in June 2014.
A a traffic study commissioned by Hendels and backed up by a town-retained engineer cited a minimal impact.

The modifications include:
- Making the building colonial in design
- Right turns only for cars traveling into and exiting the station.
- Sign alterations are to come, according to the minutes.
