Local Wrestlers to Compete In State Open

Somers sending three to state championships, among 10 from local Patch coverage area.

Three wrestlers from Somers High School will lead a contingent of 10 grapplers from schools in the local Patch coverage area in the State Open Championships, beginning Friday afternoon at the New Haven Athletic Center.

The will be represented by Ken Vollaro (seeded third at 215 lbs.), Kyle Foster (10th, 189 lbs.) and Nick Zachary (12th, 112 lbs.).

Manchester has two competitors in the Open, with Chris Turner (14th, 160 lbs.) and Joel Marietti (15th, 135 lbs.).

Forest Dolby of Cheney Tech is the highest-seeded wrestler from the area, ranked second in the 135 lb. division. At 140 lbs., Seth Miller of East Windsor is sixth, and Mark Gonzalez of East Catholic is 10th.

Matt Janiga of (11th, 160 lbs.) and Nathaneal Bonesteel of Windsor (13th, 285 lbs.) round out the local representatives.

The State Open begins at 5 p.m. Friday, and continues Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
