Mill Rate Remains Unchanged In Ellington 2020-21 Budget

ELLINGTON, CT — A modest 4.3 percent increase in the town's recently approved budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year means the property tax rate will remain at 32.6 mills for the second straight year.

The Board of Finance approved a budget of $63,366,361, up from $60,738,914 in 2019-20. Of the total budget, $40.6 million, or just over 64 percent, is allocated to the Board of Education, while the general government budget is just under $21.4 million. The Board of Education's share represents a 2.6 percent increase over 2019-20.

Under the general government ledger, the sharpest increase was in the public works department, with an approved total of $6.8 million representing a 58.3 percent bump from this year. The Board of Selectmen had originally requested just over $7.5 million for public works, meaning more than $720,000 was trimmed from the original proposal.

Public safety remained nearly flat, increasing just over one-half of one percent to $3.17 million. The salary of First Selectman Lori Spielman was boosted slightly, from $92,498 to $95,273.

Revenue projections for the coming fiscal year total $63,366,361, with $46.5 million coming from property taxes and $10.75 million from state and federal grants.
