Royal Baby? Aren't they all Special?

In this installment of 'A View From the Deck', J. Wiley Dumas examines the hype over the arrival of Britain's next heir to the throne and asks "Why?"

NOTE: The following is OPINION. It is the Point of View of the author and his alone.

The birth of any child into this uncertain world is always cause for celebration, particularly when the parents truly desire to take on the incredible responsibility of raising the child and providing love and nurture.

But to single out one child over all others, simply because it is going to be born into Britain’s Royal Family, is nothing more than worshiping elitism.

It’s great that the royal couple is about to have a baby. Really. It’s awesome. I’m happy for them. We all share in their joy.

Actually, we have no choice, because the American media has been covering the story nonstop.

Amidst the all the excitement, we’ve forgotten something that’s kind of important:

We rebelled against the royals a couple hundred years ago.

You must have heard about it. It was in all the papers.

Perhaps a refresher course is in order for those of you who didn't pay attention in school.

The king took away our rights as citizens until we fought back. Fifty-six members of the Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence that complained of ‘despotism.’

“The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States,” it reads.

Additionally, it lists the king’s offenses from “imposing Taxes on us without our Consent” to abolishing laws and cutting off trade. “He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.” The king was accused of violence “scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.”

In short, the King of England was not a very nice guy. We fought a long war and won our freedom. About 20 some odd years later, we fought another war with Britain where they burned Washington, D.C.

But, hindsight being 20/20 and all that, considering the way things are right now, maybe someone at the time shoulda helped light those torches.

Regardless, we eventually became friends and allies with England. My odd combination of Mediterranean and Slavic Heritage doesn’t really allow me to enjoy most things British, particularly the food, which even the English don’t enjoy.

But we need to draw the line at royalty. This is America. We spent a lot of time in this nation’s early history fighting against the royals, not gushing over them.

We hear CBS’s Elizabeth Palmer telling us “the birth of this baby will be big news.”

NBC has expounded the hype, as well, calling it ‘The Great Kate Wait’ and ‘Great Expectations.’

 ‘The Daily Show’ temporary host John Oliver gave his two-pence worth, saying, “Kate Middleton is about to give birth to the greatest baby in the history of civilization.”

But he’s a Brit, so he’s excused. And I honestly would have loved to hear John Stewart’s take on the whole thing. Particularly considering that Prince William’s gene pool is the result of many years of selective inbreeding.

How else can one explain Prince Charles’s ears?

I’m joking of course.

Even the Abortion Rights crowd has gone gaga over the arrival of the Royal bundle of joy, which is somewhat ironic, considering.

American women, we are told, are raised from birth to want to be princesses. They get bombarded by images of Disney princesses and (allegedly) every woman wants to be just like them.

A quick look at what happened to many of these Disney actresses should end that argument. (Think Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and Lindsay Lohan).

‘nuff said.

Besides, who needs foreign princesses when we have our own right here? Sure, Kate is cute and classy, but ours are home-grown. We’ve got REAL Hollywood royalty, such as the Kardashians…

…Never Mind.

But, all in all, the birth of any child is a wondrous event. And I can think of many here at home that their arrival should have gotten the attention that the royal baby is garnering.

So, to Kate and William, my best wishes on the imminent arrival of your child. Celebrate it. Love it. Nurture it.

(Until you hand it off to the platoon of nannies and ship it off to boarding school)

And for all of you here at home, in America, who are also expecting, please know that I consider the birth of your children equally, if not even more, important.
