Somers Captures Second Straight Lacrosse Championship

The Spartans overwhelmed second-seeded Waterford in the Class S title match Saturday.

NORWALK, CT — For the second straight season, Somers High School journeyed 93 miles to Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk Saturday for a 10:30 a.m. berth in the Class S boys lacrosse championship game. And for the second time in 364 days, the 93-mile trek back to northern Connecticut was a joyous one, as the top-seeded Spartans overwhelmed No. 2 Waterford 19-5 to repeat as state champions.

Somers opened up a 10-3 by halftime, then broke the match open with seven unanswered goals in the third quarter, securing the school's fifth state title in six championship match appearances.

Dom Giachello and Dante Giachello tallied five goals apiece to pace the Spartans' high-octane offense, while Christian Paley chipped in with four goals. Joe Mongillo, Colin Whitford, Riley Burgmyer, Riley Miller and Avery Foye notched one goal apiece.

Netminders Chris Allen and Jacob Phillips combined for 11 saves.

Somers finished with a 20-1 record, while Waterford ended up 19-3.
