Somers Firefighters Train For Ice Rescues At Mill Pond

Fire officials said the training is critical as frozen ponds and lakes pose seasonal risks.

SOMERS, CT — The Somers Fire Department recently conducted ice and cold water rescue training at the Somersville Mill Pond as part of its winter preparedness efforts.

According to the Somers Fire Department, the training took place Jan. 19 and focused on techniques and equipment used to safely remove people from icy water while minimizing risk to rescuers. Fire officials said this type of training is critical during winter conditions, when frozen ponds and lakes can pose serious hazards.

As part of the training update, the department also shared ice safety reminders for residents. Officials stressed that ice should never be assumed to be fully safe, and warned people to avoid ice that appears thin, discolored, or is near moving water. Pet owners were urged to keep animals leashed near frozen bodies of water.
