Somers Lacrosse Sweeps State Championships

SOMERS, CT — It was a championship weekend for Somers High School lacrosse.

Both the Somers girls and boys varsity lacrosse teams won CIAC Class S state championships at Rafferty Stadium at Fairfield University, completing a two-day sweep for the Spartans.

The Somers girls lacrosse team defeated Lauralton Hall 11-10 Saturday afternoon in the Class S final, according to the CIAC championship scoreboard.

The boys team followed Sunday with a 9-8 overtime win over Suffield in the Class S championship game, also according to the CIAC scoreboard.

For the girls program, the win marked its first CIAC championship. GameTimeCT reported that Maddie Nowakowski scored five goals for Somers, while Maya Skalski had four goals and an assist.

The boys final came down to overtime. GameTimeCT reported Harry Accorsi scored 1:20 into overtime to give Somers the 9-8 win. Conor Warnock led the Spartans with three goals, while Accorsi and Gabe Harrison each scored twice.

Somers goalie Evan Poulin, a four-year starter, made 27 saves in the championship win, according to GameTimeCT. Poulin was also recently listed by CAS-CIAC as one of Somers High School’s two 2025-26 Scholar-Athlete honorees, along with Madeleine Dennis.

The boys title was Somers’ sixth CIAC championship and first since 2017. It came in the same season longtime head coach Ken McCarthy reached 500 career wins.

McCarthy became just the third Connecticut high school boys lacrosse coach to reach 500 wins when Somers defeated Ellington 15-1 earlier this season. He has led the Somers boys program since 1993.

The Somers Lacrosse Association also recognized McCarthy’s milestone in a social media post, crediting him with helping shape “generations of Somers kids” through leadership, commitment and his impact on the community.

The association also congratulated both varsity teams before the championship games, saying the players had shown “hard work, dedication, sportsmanship, and heart” throughout the season.

By the end of the weekend, Somers had claimed Class S championships on both the boys and girls sides.
