Tri-Town Falls to West Haven In Overtime

Locke ties game late in the third period, but Blue Devils win in extra session.

Mike Troiano scored his second goal of the game with 1:50 remaining in overtime, lifting 10th-ranked West Haven to a 3-2 win over Tri-Town Wednesday at the Enfield Twin Rinks.

Troiano's game-winning breakaway came seconds after Zack Palmer barely missed converting the rebound of a Nick Binkowski shot for Tri-Town.

Mike Hanna got things started early for Tri-Town, scoring on a wraparound just 2:36 into the contest. Binkowski assisted on the goal.

Hanna had pair of chances to increase the lead in the second period. He hit the post on one attempt, and later missed the net on a shorthanded breakaway.

"We had our opportunities, and we didn't take advantage of them," Tri-Town head coach Paul Dowe said. "You can't be upset with the guys for the way they played tonight."

Kyle Leyerzapf tied the game for the Blue Devils with 2:09 left in the second period, beating screened Tri-Town goaltender Mitch Diresta.

Midway through the third period, Troiano provided West Haven its first lead of the day, firing home a wrister from the right side of the net on a power play.

With 3:50 to play in regulation, Brian Borbas sent a perfect crossing pass in front of the net to Justin Locke, who one-timed it past West Haven goalie J.P. Withington to knot the score 2-2.

A tripping penalty on David Landino gave Tri-Town a man advantage for the final 1:57 of the third period, but the Blue Devils killed the penalty to force overtime and set the stage for Troiano's heroics.

Tri-Town (11-7) travels to South Windsor Saturday at 5 p.m., looking to avenge a 3-1 loss to the Bobcats on Feb. 7.
