Tri-Town Shelter May Be Forced to Close

Without state funding, the shelter - which serves Vernon, Tolland, Ellington, and other communities - may have to close its doors.

Without state funding for next year, the Tri-Town shelter may be closing its doors, according to the Hartford Courant.

The shelter - which serves Vernon, Tolland, Ellington, and other communities - was expecting to receive $135,000 from the state, but the funding was denied.

That money makes up approximately 40 percent of the shelter’s budget, and without it, the facility may have to close.

Leaders at the shelter are looking into possible options - such as fundraising or merging with another agency - but if another solution is not reached, the shelter may close by the end of July.

Currently, the shelter is serving men, women, children, and families. There are more children in the shelter than there ever have been before.

Another local shelter, the Manchester Area Conference of Churches, will also be closing this year. MACC chose to close its doors as opposed to admitting substance abusers.
