A vehicle slammed into an automated teller machine in Somers and police are considering it an attempted larceny.
SOMERS, CT — A vehicle slammed into a kiosk-style automated teller machine in Somers sometime during the overnight hours Monday into Tuesday. The incident was later classified by state police as an attempted theft.
The ATM, operated by United Bank, is located at the southern edge of the Southfield Commons shopping plaza, located at 48 South Road.
A United Bank staffer at the scene said he was notified of the crash early Tuesday morning. Extensive damage could be seen from the road.

State police had already been to the scene by the morning commute and the crash is still being investigated. By the afternoon, though, they classified the crash as an attempted larceny and said the search was on for a pickup truck driver.
The incident took place at 10:44 p.m., state police said. According to a 9-1-1 call made to state police, a full size pick-up truck approached the United Bank ATM kiosk and began ramming it repeatedly.

State police released video of the incident taken by a witness on Tuesday afternoon. The operator of the pickup is seen exiting the vehicle in an attempt to "conduct a larceny," but was unsuccessful, state police said.
The operator then fled the scene in what is believed to be a gray Chevrolet or GMC pickup. The driver’s side rear quarter panel area sustained "moderate damage" and the rear left tail light was broken as a result of the attempt to ram the ATM, state police said.
Still images were also released.
The structure that "protected" the ATM sustained extensive damage, state police said.
United Bank spokesman Adam Jeamel said Tuesday morning the ATM would be closed indefinitely. The next closest United Bank ATM is at the branch at 612 Main St., inside the building.
The bank released the following related statement late Tuesday morning:
"Our standalone ATM at 48 South Road in Somers is out-of-service due to unexpected damage and will be not available for transactions for some time. But don’t worry! Customers in the area who need access to a 24-hour ATM can visit our conveniently-located branch at 612 Main Street in Somers - less than a half-mile away. Thank you for your patience and understanding."
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or knows the truck can call state police at the Troop C barracks, 860-896-3200.
