SOMERS/ELLINGTON, CT — An Ellington man is accused of assaulting a cyclist on a Somers road after previously cutting him off, state police said.

Jason Meachem is facing a number of charges — first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree assault, disorderly conduct and second-degree criminal mischief — for the Sept. 20 incident, state police said in an arrest report. He surrendered on Oct. 14 after learning that a warrant had been issued for his arrest, state police said.

The warrant states that at 3:35 in the afternoon on Sept. 20, troopers responded to the area of Field Road for a cycling claiming he was assaulted, according to the warrant.

The cyclist told state police that a short while earlier, he was riding eastbound on Route 83 when a green Subaru cut him off while turning into the Dunkin's Donuts parking lot, according to the warrant.

He then yelled at the driver in an exclamation that may have included a swear word, according to the warrant.

The cyclist continued riding but was warned by a passing motorist that the Subaru might be coming after him, according to the warrant. He was then yelled at and cut off by the Subaru driver — Meachem — who then exited the vehicle, grabbed the cyclist by the helmet, threw him to the ground and tossed the $5,000 pro-style bike "across the street" before fleeing the scene, according to the warrant.

The gear system and seat were damaged on the bike, according the warrant.
