Smoke Alarm Wakes Resident, Limits Damage In Fire

A sleeping occupant was alerted in time to escape safely as firefighters contained a closet fire.

ELLINGTON, CT — A working smoke alarm helped wake a sleeping resident and prevent injuries during a Monday morning apartment fire at Meadowbrook Apartments, town officials said.

At about 10:30 a.m. Feb. 2, the Ellington Volunteer Fire Department was called to a reported fire at the Meadowbrook Apartments on Meadow Brook Road. Mutual aid was automatically requested from nearby departments, along with ambulance services and state police.

Firefighters arrived within minutes and found a fire inside a closet of one apartment. The fire was quickly put out, and officials said it did not spread beyond the closet.

According to officials, the apartment’s smoke alarm sounded and woke the resident, giving them time to get out safely and call 911. No injuries were reported.

One person was displaced by the fire, and officials said the property management company is working to find temporary housing.

The incident was investigated by James J. York, Ellington’s Fire Marshal, who is handling the cause of the fire, according to a social media post by town officials. The cause remains under investigation.
