Alumni Game Planned for Former Fermi Hockey Team Members

Former Fermi players, coaches and managers are invited to the Falcons' Senior Day game, which will be followed by an alumni game.

With the imminent closure of Fermi High School upon graduation of the 45th class this coming June, many “last time...” events are being planned.

One of them involves the ice hockey program, which started in 1973 and produced two Division II state championship teams and a host of league and tournament title-winning clubs.

Since 2011, Fermi hockey has been a co-op with Enfield High School (and since 2013, East Granby and Stafford as well). However, while the Enfield name will carry on after this season, the Fermi name will be retired.

To celebrate 43 years of great Fermi hockey, an alumni gathering has been scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Enfield Twin Rinks. All former Fermi hockey players, coaches and managers are invited.

The day begins at 4:30 p.m. with Fermi’s final Senior Day ceremonies, followed by a matchup with CCC South rival Hall-Southington. After that game, an alumni game will take place, featuring players and coaches from all eras of Fermi hockey.

Original head coach Ed Mantenuto, who directed the team for the first five seasons, is scheduled to appear at the gathering.

Any former player, coach or manager wishing to participate must pre-register, and a nominal fee to cover the cost of ice rental will be collected. Full gear is required to play in the alumni game.

A Facebook page has been set up for the event.
