Assumption College, Worcester MA
- Assumption College honored 76 students with awards for academic excellence during the 33rd Annual Honors Convocation, held on April 19 in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Awards ranged from departmental honors to special recognitions, to Augustine Scholarships, the College's highest academic honor.
During the ceremony, Stephen Picard of Enfield, a member of the Class of 2017, received the Prof. James McCarthy Scholarship for the Study of Economics or Global Studies. - Stephen Picard, of Enfield, was one of 90 students selected to present an original academic research project at Assumption College's 23rd Annual Undergraduate Symposium, held April 24-25 on the College's Worcester Campus. The undergraduate symposium serves to highlight the research and scholarly achievements of Assumption students working in collaboration with dedicated faculty mentors. These collaborations represent a model for integrating teaching, original research, and the beneficial effects of peer review in promoting intellectual development and professional growth. The symposium provides the campus community with the opportunity to gain a greater appreciation of and applaud the individual and collective accomplishments of the College's faculty and students. Picard, a member of the Class of 2017, presented "Effect of Distance from NHL Affiliate on AHL Attendance". This project examined the effect of American Hockey League teams locating closer to their National Hockey League affiliates. Picard's results indicated that less popular AHL teams should relocate closer to their NHL affiliates in order to increase ticket sales..

- Eastern Connecticut State University inducted business majors with a concentration in marketing into Alpha Mu Alpha (AMA), the national marketing honor society, on April 18. Among the inductees was Heather Murray of Enfield who majors in Business Administration. Each year, select students are honored for their distinguished academic achievement by membership into AMA. By obtaining membership into an honor society, students are given the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals and professionals along with being recognized for their academic success throughout their college years.
- A group of Eastern Connecticut State University students was inducted into Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), the national honor society for the computing and information disciplines, this April. At its 2017 ceremony, Eastern inducted 21 students who major in computer science and business information systems. Among the inductees was Christopher Corso of Enfield, who majors in Computer Science. The mission of UPE is to recognize academic excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the computing and information disciplines. UPE is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS). UPE was first organized at Texas A&M University in 1967. The international organization now consists of chapters in various colleges and universities in North America and overseas. UPE is the first and only international honor society in the computing and information disciplines.
- Eastern Connecticut State University's Biology Department recently bestowed awards upon students who achieved excellence in academic excellence, research and as teaching assistants. Kevin Connolly of Enfield was one of the awardees. Connolly was awarded the Yaw Barwuah Award for Outstanding Biology Research: Outstanding Performance on a Continuing Research Project.
- The Concert Chorale at Eastern Connecticut State University performed alongside the West Hartford Symphony Orchestra this past April for its annual spring concert in the Fine Arts Instructional Center (FAIC). Among the performers was Caraline Gartrell of Enfield, who sings in Eastern Concert Chorale. Gartrell majors in Communication and Theatre. The Eastern Concert Chorale is the largest vocal ensemble at Eastern and focuses on choral and orchestral masterworks, as well as shorter choral selections. The ensemble performed a collection of opera overtures, choruses and arias with pieces by Orff, Borodin, Bizet, Puccini, Verdi and other composers.
- The Third Annual CREATE Conference at Eastern Connecticut State University took place on April 21. CREATE stands for "Celebrating Research Excellence and Artistic Talent at Eastern," and is the University's premier conference showcasing student research and creative activity. The one-day conference featured more than 300 Eastern undergraduates who presented talks, professional posters, live music, dance performances, art and photography exhibits, documentary films and panel discussions.
Participants from Enfield were Emily Miclon, who majors in Political Science and Music and presented an oral presentation titled "Constructing Authenticity through Intertextuality: An Analysis of Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly," and Patrick Thomson, who majors in History and presented a poster titled "Love Is Love: The Rise and Fall of the Defense of Marriage Act." - Jessica Miclon, a student at Eastern Connecticut State University, had her work published in the 2017 edition of the student literary journal "Eastern Exposure." Miclon hails from Enfield and majors in English and Sociology. "Eastern Exposure" is published annually by the Eastern Writers Guild, a student-run organization. The journal is composed entirely of student work.
- A number of Eastern Connecticut State University students were recently inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the national honor society for the field of communication. Danielle Turgeon of Enfield was one of the inductees. Turgeon's major is Communication. The society recognizes students who have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, a communication studies GPA of at least 3.25, are in the upper 35 percent of their graduating class, are enrolled in good standing and display a commitment to the field of communication.
- The Percussion Ensemble and Percussion Group at Eastern Connecticut State University presented their annual spring concert on April 29 in the Fine Arts Instructional Center (FAIC) Concert Hall. Emily Miclon of Enfield was one of the musicians who performed. Miclon majors in Political Science and Music. The ensemble presented a collection of large ensemble works and chamber repertoire, including pieces by Michael Culligan, Josh Gottry, Vittorio Monti, Ivan Trevino, Shane Shanahan and Jim Casella. Four singers contributed vocals to "Catching Shadows" by Trevino.
- Talented musicians at Eastern Connecticut State University performed in the Concert Band's annual spring concert on April 26 in the Concert Hall of the Fine Arts Instructional Center (FAIC). Among the student performers was Emily Miclon of Enfield, who played percussion and majors in Political Science and Music. Eastern's Concert Band is a blend of more than eighty musicians comprised of Eastern students, faculty, alumni and musicians from the eastern Connecticut area. Performance repertoire includes classic band literature as well as challenging works from contemporary composers. The concert included repertoire from Aaron Copeland, Steven Bryant, William Shuman and Samual Barber.
- A group of Political Science students were recently inducted into Alpha Beta Gamma, Eastern Connecticut State University's chapter of the national honor society for political science, Pi Sigma Alpha. The society recognizes the most promising students in the discipline. Emily Miclon of Enfield was one of the inductees. Miclon's major is Political Science and Music.
Western New England University, Springfield MA
- The Western New England University chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society welcomed 20 students at the University's 13th annual induction ceremony which took place on April 13 at the Log Cabin Restaurant in Holyoke, MA. Enfield honorees are Ryan Leite, majoring in Finance, and Macy Peach, majoring in Management and Leadership. Beta Gamma Sigma is a national honor society for business majors at schools accredited by AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Students are selected from the top 7% of juniors, top 10% of seniors and to 20% of graduate students. Candidates must have completed two semesters of study at Western New England University.
- Devin Kindred of Enfield has been elected to serve as Resident Representative for the 2017-2018 academic year. Kindred, majoring in Management and Leadership, was chosen by almost 400 who voted in this year's election which took place on March 23. The undergraduate student government, "Voice of the Students", serves as the official liaison between the Student Association and the University. The Student Senate serves as the legislative and executive branches of student governance and is a recognized forum of student opinion. The goal for this organization is to reach out to undergraduate population and let their comments, concerns, opinions, and voices be heard.
- Emily Gahr from Enfield was elected to serve as Secretary of the 2017-2018 executive board of the Western New England University Pynchon Chapter of Mortar Board National Honor Society. Election results were announced on April 10 at the University chapter's annual induction ceremony. As Secretary, Gahr will record meeting notes and minutes to provide a permanent record of chapter's activities.
Mortar Board is the senior honor society at Western New England University. The society is open to those students who have demonstrated both academic excellence and leadership on campus and in the community. Students in the top 35% of the junior class are considered eligible for the society with the membership being selected by the existing members of the previous year. The Mortar Board Society hopes to recognize student achievement, while also serving as a focal point of planning and collaboration for senior leaders. Gahr is majoring in Industrial Engineering. - Paige Hebert of Enfield was welcomed into Psi Chi National Honor Society on April 20, 2017, at the Western New England University chapter's annual induction ceremony which took place in the University's Center for the Sciences and Pharmacy. Psi Chi is the national honor society in psychology and is an affiliate of the American Psychological Association. The purpose of the honor society is to advance the science of psychology and to encourage, stimulate, and maintain scholarship.
