NORTHERN CT — In between the 27 hours of pregame hype, the debate over what were the greatest and worst Super Bowl halftime performances, speculation as to what the best commercials would be during the big game and the inevitable arguments over who gets to wolf down the last spicy chicken wing, America's favorite new sport - bashing the media's obsession with Taylor Swift - was on full display around the globe Sunday.

Well, maybe not full display, for in northern Connecticut, hundreds of Cox Communications customers took to the modern-day airwaves - various social media pages - to report a service outage expected to last until well after the game had started.

Many viewers in towns such as Enfield, East Windsor, Suffield, and Windsor Locks reported receiving the following message:

The estimated restoration time of 7:10 p.m. was about 40 minutes after the scheduled kickoff time of 6:30 p.m. Some people said their service came back prior to the start of the game, but others said they still had nothing as of halftime.

A few customers said they called the cable company, and were told the problem was a "scheduled maintenance" issue, which left them incredulous.

  • "Multiple areas went out due to a "scheduled maintenance" as many were saying they were told by Cox? If that's true, someone should be fired for not notifying their customers."
  • "Of all days of days to have. This is definitely one of them. Thanks Cox we are greatly in your debt."
  • "Cox says "scheduled maintenance." Seriously??? Must be a default message. No moron would schedule that on Super Bowl Sunday. Every single family should be asking for reimbursement!"

One Facebook poster summed up the state of affairs in two sentences of biting sarcasm:

"Only in Enfield do you lose internet/cable on Super Bowl Sunday. Someone please update me on how Taylor Swift's boyfriend is playing at the Usher concert."
