When Democrats vote in a Democratic primary, they deserve to choose from candidates who have consistently supported Democratic values, stood with our party, and earned the trust of Democratic voters. Healthy debate is important. Different ideas strengthen our party. But transparency matters just as much.
As Democratic voters consider their choice in the 58th District, it’s worth looking beyond campaign mailers, television ads, and billboards and examining the public record.
Tom Tyler’s campaign consultant, The Townsend Group, Inc. of New York, is a Republican political consulting firm. His campaign treasurer is a Republican. Public campaign finance records show that Tom Tyler contributed $6,000 to Republican Party organizations over the past three years. He also served as Enfield’s town attorney after being appointed by the Republican-controlled Town Council, serving in that position from 2023 through 2025.

Taken together, these facts raise a fundamental question of credibility. Democratic voters have every right to ask how someone with such significant ties to Republican consultants, Republican leadership, Republican financial support, and Republican political allies can now ask to become the Democratic nominee for State Representative. Simply stating your party registration does not erase years of political associations or automatically establish a Democratic record. Democratic voters deserve to know not only what a candidate says today, but what their record has been over time.
So ask yourself this: Who is the Republican candidate running for State Representative in the 58th District? As far as anyone knows, there isn’t one. Doesn’t it strike you as unusual that so many Republicans have chosen to publicly campaign for Tom Tyler? Republicans certainly have every right to support whomever they choose. But Democratic voters should carefully consider why so many Republicans are working so hard to influence the outcome of a Democratic primary.

A Democratic primary belongs to Democratic voters. It is our opportunity to choose a nominee who has consistently lived our values, supported Democratic candidates, and built a record of Democratic leadership. In this race, only one candidate has spent years doing exactly that. As State Representative, John Santanella has consistently fought alongside Democrats to protect reproductive freedom, defend LGBTQ+ rights, strengthen public education, lower costs for working families, and deliver meaningful results for Enfield. His record is well documented, and Democratic voters deserve the opportunity to judge it against the alternatives.
Before casting your ballot, ask yourself one final question: If so many Republicans are investing their time, energy, and political capital trying to elect one candidate in a Democratic primary, what do they hope to gain?
Only you can answer that question. But before voting in a Democratic primary, it’s a question every Democrat should ask.
