Election 2012: Enfield Results

Murphy wins Enfield, state; Courtney re-elected; Kiner retains District 59 seat; Alexander prevails in District 58; Kissel elected to 11th term in 7th Senatorial District.

Democrats in Enfield were rejoicing Tuesday night, as the party retained both House district seats.

Unofficial totals showed David Alexander posting a convincing victory over Republican Tom Sirard for the 58th District seat. The two were vying for the post previously held for 14 years by Kathy Tallarita, who lost to Alexander in an August primary.

"I'm very excited and very humbled," Alexander said at Democratic headquarters in the Hazard Trade Mart. "The work begins starting this week to transition into going to the state House. I'm excited to start working hard for the people of Enfield."

In the 59th District, which now includes the Warehouse Point section of East Windsor, incumbent Democrat David Kiner turned back Republican challenger Joe Bosco.

"It was a hard-fought victory, we worked very hard for many months, knocked on thousands of doors and made hundreds of phone calls," Kiner said. "We got a very positive response, and this victory is for the towns of Enfield and East Windsor."

The only local Republican victory was in the 7th Senatorial District, which 10-term incumbent John Kissel retained by about 600 votes over Democratic challenger Karen Jarmoc.

"We were definitely on pins and needles today," Kissel said. "Karen was a very formidable opponent, and it was very gracious of her to call me at 10:10 to concede."

Voters overwhelmingly approved the proposed consolidation of Fermi and Enfield high schools, and approved the re-districting of the town's four voting districts.

In statewide races, Democrat Chris Murphy bested Linda McMahon for a U.S. Senate seat, while incumbent U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney retained his District 2 post by a wide margin over challenger Paul Formica.
