Enfield Board of Education Member Clarifies Bathroom Policy After Student Concern

During the January 13 meeting of the Enfield Board of Education, Board of Education member Dean Gousse shared an interaction involving a student question about the district’s current bathroom policy.

Mr. Gousse explained that a female student approached him after experiencing discomfort when she encountered a male student in a shared bathroom. According to his remarks, the student expressed unease with the situation and sought clarification on the policy currently in place. He also made clear that this interaction did not result in a formal complaint and that no student names were shared during the discussion.

In response, Mr. Gousse shared the district’s bathroom policy with the student and explained its intent and application. He emphasized that the policy is designed to serve all students and that accommodations are available. Specifically, any student who feels uncomfortable using a shared restroom may request access to one of the school’s single-use bathrooms.
Mr. Gousse stated that his reason for sharing the story publicly was to ensure families and students are aware of the options available to them. The policy allows students to advocate for their own comfort and privacy, and schools are expected to provide appropriate accommodations when requested.
