The Springfield Kiltie bagpipe band performed "Amazing Grace" and a medley of patriotic tunes, while a teenage dancer from Riley's laid the traditional ceremonial wreath at the entrance to the Memorial Garden.
Earlier Sunday afternoon, Parkway Pavilion held a ceremony in its lobby on Enfield Street, unveiling a collage of 2,977 butterflies. Each had been colored by a resident, friend or volunteer, and the number signified the total number of lives taken on that fateful day.
