Enfield I-91 Construction Project Will Last Into 2027

Daytime shoulder closures and overnight lane reductions are planned in the I-91 work zone.

ENFIELD, CT — A long-term construction project on I-91 in Enfield is set to begin in April, with CTDOT warning drivers to expect closures near Grape Brook as crews tackle a multi-stage replacement job.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation said work on the structure carrying I-91 over Grape Brook is scheduled to start Monday, April 6, 2026, and continue through Thursday, Nov. 25, 2027.

CTDOT said temporary construction access roads will be created off I-91 on both ends of the structure.

Officials said the work will be done in five stages, including a pre-stage, three main construction phases and a post stage. CTDOT said three lanes of traffic in both directions will be maintained throughout construction.

The contract for Project No. 0048-0200 was awarded to Waters Construction Company, Inc. on Jan. 8, 2026, for $13,724,834.65. The project is being administered by CTDOT’s Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 1 in Rocky Hill.

Drivers should expect shoulder closures on I-91 near Grape Brook from April 6, 2026, through Nov. 25, 2027, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Overnight lane closures are also planned from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

CTDOT said traffic control signs and state troopers will guide motorists through the work zone. Officials also said the schedule could change because of weather or other unforeseen delays.
