Enfield Man Charged With Ramming Into Police Cars, Injuring Officers in Springfield

Two Springfield police officers were injured during the Saturday night incident.

SPRINGFIELD, MA — An Enfield man was held in custody over the weekend in connection with a Saturday night incident in which he rammed his vehicle into a pair of police cars.

George Dobitsky, 47, was charged with four counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, failure to stop for police, reckless driving and operating under suspension. He was scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

Late Saturday afternoon, two officers from the Springfield Police Department street crime unit received information from several sources that a white male in a red Toyota with Connecticut plates was dealing drugs near School and High streets. The officers were familiar with the car and the operator, and also knew the driver had a revoked Massachusetts license, Sgt. John Delaney said.

At 5:45 p.m. Saturday, officers spotted the suspect, later identified as Dobitsky, on Mulberry Street. The officers attempted to pull the car over, but Dobitsky ignored their signals and took off at a high rate of speed. During the pursuit, Dobitsky "played chicken" with the officers in an attempt to drive them off the road. The vehicle then jumped onto Interstate 91 southbound and fled into Connecticut, as officers from the Enfield Police Department were notified to be on the lookout for the car, Delaney said.

Street crime unit officers again spotted the same car at School and High streets around 9:20 p.m., with Dobitsky behind the wheel. The officers pinned the car from the front and the rear, so Dobitsky put the car in reverse, slamming into an approaching police officer and pinning his leg between the suspect's car and police vehicle, Delaney said.

Dobitsky then put his car in drive and crashed it into the other police car, injuring another officer. Other police arrived on the scene and were able to take Dobitsky into custody after a brief standoff, Delaney said.

Both injured officers were brought to the Baystate Medical Center, where they were treated and released, according to Delaney.
