The animal was seriously injured in the stabbing.

ENFIELD, CT — A verbal argument between a mother and son escalated into violence early Wednesday, resulting in the woman's dog being stabbed and seriously injured and the man being placed under arrest.

Sean Colgan, 36, of Enfield, was charged with maliciously wounding/killing an animal, carrying a dangerous weapon, interfering with an emergency call and second-degree breach of peace.

He was held overnight in lieu of $75,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned in Enfield Superior Court Wednesday.

Deputy Police Chief Gary Collins said officers were dispatched to Nutmeg Avenue around 1 a.m. with a report of a woman shouting, "Call the police!" En route to the scene, police were advised a suspect, later identified as Colgan, was injecting air into his arm with a needle.

Upon arrival, police found Colgan sitting on the lawn with a syringe hanging from the right side of his neck. He removed the syringe, then stuck it back into his neck several times before tossing it to the ground. He was then taken into custody, Collins said.

The dog, a pug, had been stabbed multiple times with a large folding knife. During the incident, the woman tried to call 911, but Colgan allegedly grabbed her phone and snapped it in half, Collins said.

Enfield EMS bandaged the dog, and it was eventually transported to a local veterinarian. The vet recommended the animal be put down due to the serious nature of its injuries, but the owner declined and brought it home, Collins said.
