Enfield Obituary: Thomas Hooper, 88

Condolences to his family and friends.

Thomas E. Hooper, 88, of Old Lyme, husband of Diane (Bigelow) Hooper, died Tuesday, May 17, 2016 after a brief illness.

Born in Hartford, he formerly lived in West Hartford and Enfield before retiring to Rogers Lake in Old Lyme. Tom was an avid amateur radio operator with the call sign W1RFL and spent hour after hour in his shack. Known to his family and close friends as "Herm", after being caught chuckling during the Munsters TV show by his two sons, Tom had a great sense of humor and enjoyed teasing one and all. A graduate of Hall High School in 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a Radioman Third Class aboard the USS Sicily during World War II. He later attended Hillyer College before working in the electronic component field.

Besides his wife of 65 years, he is survived by his two sons, Thomas B. Hooper (Kathryn) of Burlington and Gregg E. Hooper (Kim Kolakowski) of Garner, North Carolina; and his granddaughters, Katharine J. Hooper of Burlington and Ashley Hooper (Justin Andrews) of Oro Valley, Arizona. He is predeceased by his sister Eve Hooper and his beloved grandson Brett Hooper.
