Around noon, Superintendent of Schools Chris Drezek issued the following statement to parents and students via the town's notification system:
"I am reaching out to all families, students, and staff of Enfield High School and the Enfield community regarding an event that occurred over the weekend.
As you may have heard, we learned early Monday morning that an Enfield High School student tragically passed away. Atthis time, the Enfield Police Department is conducting an investigation into this event. They have assured us that staff and students are not in any danger and that this is an isolated incident that took place off school grounds; however, as an added precaution, we have requested an increased police presence at the high school for the coming days.
Asthis is an ongoing investigation, we are not authorized to share any additional information at this time.
We will continue to offer supports for all students and staff as long as it is needed. Counselors and professionals will be available in the school for the remainder of the week. If your child needs any additional support, please reach out to the administration at Enfield High School.
In addition, there was a completely separate and unrelated altercation that occurred on Friday afternoon off school grounds. School administration is both aware ofthis altercation and working in collaboration with the Enfield Police Department on this matter. Again, the two events are unrelated.
We are all devastated by today’s events and want to assure you that the safety and security of our students and staff is our highest priority. We will continue to do everything possible to assist this entire community as we cope with this tragedy."
A Connecticut State Police Major Crime unit was assisting local police with the investigation Monday morning.
