Ernie Maynard to be Honored by Rotary Club of Enfield
The Rotary Club of Enfield on October 27th will be bestowing the International Club's top honor of a Paul Harris Award to Ernie Maynard.
A lifelong Enfield resident and a World War II and Korean War Veteran, Ernie Maynard is often touted, at the age of 97, as the town’s oldest living veteran. The Rotary Club of Enfield on Wednesday, October 27th will be bestowing the International Club’s top honor of a Paul Harris Award to Maynard.
The public is invited to join in the celebration by attending a 6 p.m. ceremony at the Fairfield Inn (1 Bright Meadow Blvd.) in Enfield. No tickets are required. The Rotary Club of Enfield has made a $1,000 donation to The Rotary Foundation, in Maynard’s honor as part of the Paul Harris recognition.
A recipient of the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal, Maynard has also received other honors for his military service. A former volunteer for the Hazardville Fire Department, Maynard served as a Fire Commissioner. He has been an active volunteer throughout town, including at the Enfield Senior Center.

Rotary established the recognition in 1957 to encourage and show appreciation for substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships.
At the International Assembly in 1979, incoming RI President James Bomar challenged each Rotary club to make one non-Rotarian a Paul Harris Fellow. The Rotary Club of Pikesville, Maryland, responded, by making a donation in the name of Mother Teresa, in 1980.

Many other notable figures have been named Paul Harris Fellows, including U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Russian President Boris Yeltsin, U.S. astronaut James Lovell, UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar, and polio vaccine developer Jonas Salk.
A cash bar and cheese and crackers will be available on the 27th. The Rotary Club of Enfield meets on Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. in Asnuntuck Community College’s Conference Center.
