Enfield First Readers will celebrate their 5th award
ceremony Saturday, July 7th 2012 immediately following the 4th
of July parade. The Recognition Ceremony
will take place on the Higgins School stage. This ceremony will recognize the children
certified since February. All First Readers certified during the 2011 – 2012
school year are invited to march in this year’s parade. Marchers should check in at 9:45 AM on the
grounds of Our Lady of Angels. Please wear your First Reader shirt. New readers will receive their shirts at
check in. All children must be
accompanied by an adult. Check out www.Firstreaders.org for more details.
The program currently includes Kindergarten and 1st Grade
students. KITE (Key Initiatives to Early Education), in collaboration
with the Enfield Public and Parochial Schools, has selected developmentally
appropriate books for children to read when their teachers feel they are just
making the transition to becoming independent readers. When the child
reads one of the designated books, he or she is named a First Reader!
Parents will be notified of this achievement and await an invitation to the
recognition ceremony.
Once a child has been certified by his or her teacher as being
able to read one of a selection of books independently for the first time, we
would like to acknowledge each child’s huge accomplishment by celebrating with
the Enfield Community. Children receive a First Readers certificate and
medal presented by their teacher and a First Readers t-shirt and recognition at
a special town ceremony. We
are expecting to recognize an additional 175 First Readers at the 4th
of July ceremony.
