Meet the Author Alice Godard Allen

Visit the Enfield Public Library on Wednesday, May 16th, at 7:00 PM to meet author, Alice Godard Allen, and discuss her book, Colonel Augustus G. Hazard and the Hazard Powder Company.

Allen tells the story of the Hazard Powder Company and the manufacture of black gunpowder.  The first powder mill was built by the Loomis Brothers in 1835 in Hazardville, Connecticut.  The mill was acquired by Colonel Augustus Hazard in 1843 and sold to the DuPont’s in the late 1800’s.  During the Civil War, 40 percent of the gunpowder used by the Union forces was manufactured here in the Connecticut Valley.  Allen also includes some little known events and pictures in her book to broaden the reader’s view on life in Hazardville and the Connecticut Valley during the 1800’s.

All programs at the Enfield Public Library are free and all are welcome.  To register for this program, please visit the Circulation Desk or call 860-763-7512.  For more information on library programs, please visit our website: www.enfieldpubliclibrary.org.
