Falcons Close Season With Loss to Glastonbury

Senior Day marks the last game for eight Fermi hockey players.

Saturday was an emotional day for the hockey team.

Not only were eight seniors suiting up for the final time in a Falcons uniform, but the game was dedicated to Senior Master Sergeant Chris Kellam and Lance Corporal Conor Beck, both of whom are serving their country overseas.

Shaun Kellam and Logan Beck, the two men's son and brother, respectively, are two of Fermi's top defensemen, and their hope heading into Saturday's game with Glastonbury was to finish the season with a win in honor of their brave family members.

Unfortunately, a victory would exceed the Falcons' grasp, as late goals in both the first and second periods propelled Glastonbury to an 8-3 victory at the Enfield Twin Rinks.

"Late goals have plagued us all year," Fermi head coach Frank Genovese said.

Fermi actually took the lead with an early goal by Guage Meunier on a breakaway. Glastonbury tied it on a tip-in by Drew Mozzer, then jumped in front on a goal by Sam Scannell with 17 seconds left in the first period.

The Tomahawks continued their momentum after the first intermission, with goals by Avery Clair and Colin Viray giving them a 4-1 advantage. Ryan Guhne got one back for the Falcons 30 seconds after Viray's goal, assisted by A.J. Latulippe.

Ethan Holdaway scored his first of three goals at 9:33, but Latulippe got it right back for the Falcons 36 seconds later, assisted by Joey Rush.

Glastonbury coach Ken Barse removed goaltender Chase Gabor in favor of top netminder Chris Hemhauser, and he stopped the Falcon offense from that point on. Holdaway's second goal with 40 seconds left in the middle period gave the Tomahawks a 6-3 lead at the second intermission.

Holdaway completed his hat trick at 6:21 of the third period, and Connor Thompson finished the scoring with 4:55 to play.

Glastonbury outshot the Falcons, 41-29.

Seniors Kellam, Rush, Guhne, Meunier, Chris Roberts, Chris Oski, Dane Hoffman and Matt Provencher played their last game for the Falcons, who finished their season with a 6-13-1 record.

"It's a great group of kids altogether," Genovese said of his senior class. "They are excellent role models, excellent leaders, and each and every one of them brings something different to the table. They are all going to be successful as long as they keep that work ethic they have."
