Fermi Knocks Off Crosstown Rival Enfield, 5-2
Stellar pitching and timely hitting give Falcons first win of the season.
Dan Brunetti pitched a complete game five-hitter, and Fermi took advantage of five Enfield errors to defeat its crosstown rival 5-2 in high school baseball action Saturday.
Brunetti threw just 87 pitches, allowing one walk while striking out six to earn the victory for the Falcons.
"Dan had great command today," Fermi head coach Bob Cressotti said. "He was getting ahead of the hitters, and he kept them off stride with his curveball."
In contrast, Enfield starter Matt Boulette struggled early with his control, but hung tough to keep the game scoreless through four innings.
"Matt pitched outstanding, and really settled down after the first inning," Enfield head coach Jay Gaucher said. "He's going to be really good for us this year, if we get a little better defensively."
Fermi broke the scoreless tie in the fifth when, with one out, Brunetti reached on an infield error, Chris Giottonini was hit by a pitch and Alex Zachary drilled a run-scoring double to left center. Greg Kraucunas was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Giottonini scored on an error off an infield grounder by A.J. Netkovick. David Tucker then singled home Zachary.
The Falcons added a single run in the sixth when Brunetti singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball, then scored on a double by Giottonini.
Enfield finally solved Brunetti in its half of the sixth. Avery Boissy led off with a double, moved to third on Tom Meskell's single, and scored on a single by Tyler Griffith. Two outs later, Meskell scored on an infield error, but the Falcons escaped with a 4-2 lead when second baseman Tim Kertanis juggled but held onto a pop fly after colliding with right fielder Cody Feltault.
Fermi added an insurance run in the seventh when Tucker singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Charlie Smith.
Both teams return to action Monday at 3:45 p.m. Fermi (1-1) plays host to East Catholic, while Enfield (1-1) travels to East Windsor.
