Furthering Democracy?

If you believe voters should be informed of all of their choices, please write a letter of your own!

Letter to the Editor, The Day, New London, Connecticut

September 27, 2014

Dear Editor,

I am writing to request that you reconsider your decision not to invite third party candidates, including me, to the upcoming congressional debate at The Garde in New London on October 14.

As last Wednesday’s editorial in The Day, celebrating your partnership with the League of Women Voters attests, “The primary mission of the LWV is to increase voter participation and to give voters the opportunity to be well informed.” I believe you share that mission.

Having spent a great deal of time meeting voters in New London, including three days at the corner of Eugene O’Neill and State during Sailfest collecting signatures, I am confident that voters feel being “well informed” includes knowing all of their options.

A plurality of voters (47% in the district) are so fed up with the two major parties that they are unaffiliated with either, meaning third parties are being considered. Countless people have told me that I will certainly win if only I can get my message out. In a perfect world, all voters would have sufficient information about all candidates to make informed voting decisions. You have the power to help make that happen.

I am happy to talk or do a screening interview if that would be helpful. I look forward to hearing from you.

Very truly yours,

Bill Clyde

On October 1 I sent the following follow-up:

Dear Paul,

As an addendum, I would suggest that you should not restrict the debate to just two candidates when you have already asked the question,
“How can anyone take this candidate seriously?”

A quick read of my website should let you know I am a serious candidate ready to contribute to a meaningful debate. And one that is worth watching.

Best regards,

Bill
