Guilty Plea Entered in Fatal Enfield Heroin Overdose

A guilty plea was entered in federal court Thursday, according to a U.S. attorney.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A 26-year-old man from Hartford pleaded guilty Thursday in connection with the heroin-related death of a man in Enfield last spring.

Aaron Gyambibi, also known as "E," pleaded guilty in New Haven federal court to one count of possession with intent to distribute, and distribution of, heroin, according to Deirdre Daly, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, and Michael J. Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration for New England.

According to court documents and statements made in court, on the morning of May 7, 2016, Enfield police and emergency medical personnel responded to a report of an unresponsive male at an Enfield residence. Responders found a 31-year-old male in the bathroom of the residence and pronounced him deceased. Officers seized two bags of heroin that were in the victim’s fist, and a needle set that was nearby, Daly said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Connecticut subsequently determined that the victim died from acute heroin and fentanyl toxicities. The investigation, which included analysis of the victim’s cellphone, revealed that the heroin ingested by the victim shortly before his death was purchased from Gyambibi, Daly said.

Gyambibi, who has been detained since his arrest on Nov. 16, 2016, is scheduled to be sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Janet C. Hall on July 6, 2017, at which time he faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 20 years, Daly said.
