Hawaiian Themed Event to Kick-Off Summer Lunch Bunch

ENFIELD, CT—Kids and families are invited to a free Summer Lunch Bunch “Hawaiian Luau” kick-off celebration on Thursday, June 9th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at St. Patrick’s Hall, 64 Pearl Street. The event will highlight the June 27th opening of the Summer Lunch Bunch 2016 season.

Ryan Obedzinski, ERfC’s Manager of Community Engagement and Partnerships, said this free event for Enfield families will include kids fingerprinting by the Enfield Police Explorers, Summer Lunch Bunch t-shirts, limbo competitions, indoor bowling, horseshoes and ring toss games, and raffles. A beach themed backdrop will also be available to take snap shots for keepsakes of the evening using personal smart phones.

The chefs from ShopRite of Enfield and Enfield Loaves & Fishes will provide Hawaiian Pizza, pineapple salsa dipping sauces, grilled chicken, rice, fruit, and make your own ice cream sundaes with a variety of fruit toppings.

Activities for parents are also planned by community resource providers. Resources and information will be available at the event from several local providers including the Enfield Food Shelf, UCONN Department of Allied Health Services with SNAP benefits, Magic Carpet, The Network, A & P Store (clothing), Enfield Family Resource Center, and ShopRite of Enfield, Miller Farms Family Markets.

Summer Lunch Bunch is a free USDA lunch program for children up to age 18. The program will operate every day from June 27 through August 19 at St. Patrick’s Hall. Youth activities begin at 11:00 am -11:45 am and lunch follows from 12:00 pm -12:45 pm.

Obedzinski said free lunches will once again be provided daily for parents who attend Summer Lunch Bunch with their children. Last summer, Summer Lunch Bunch served over 3,600 meals to children and their parents. Meals this year are funded through the MassMutual Mutual Impact grant “Healthy-Meals=Healthy Minds”. Meals are provided by the CT Renewal team (CRT) from Hartford.

Throughout the summer, educational activities and case management services will also be available to enroll families in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), to assist in enrolling children in Care 4 Kids and out-of-school time activities in the fall, and to connect families to additional community resources.

ERfC is a 501(c) 3 organization that has been providing out-of-school time activities for Enfield children and their families since 1994.
