Inmate "Unaccounted For" at Enfield Prison: UPDATED

The inmate is serving an 8-year sentence for burglary, according to judicial records.

ENFIELD, CT — An inmate at the Carl Robinson Correctional Institution in Enfield was determined to be "unaccounted for" late Sunday afternoon, prompting the prison to be placed in lockdown mode.

Jerry Mercado, 25, was last seen at 10:20 a.m. Sunday, but could not be accounted for at 3 p.m., according to prison officials.

Mercado, who was convicted in Aug. 2016 of third-degree burglary and stealing a firearm, both felonies, and a misdemeanor charge of interfering with police, has been serving an eight-year sentence, suspended after three years, and three years' probation, according to judicial records.

He is described as Hispanic, standing 5-feet-4, weighing 137 lbs., and wearing a tan jumpsuit, white T-shirt and/or gray sweatshirt.

At 9:15 p.m., Mercado had not yet been apprehended, said Karen Martucci, director of external affairs for the Department of Correction.

"He has not been caught yet, but we're working diligently together with other law enforcement to try to find him," Martucci said.

A robocall alert to residents of the area stated, "The Department of Corrections is confident that the unaccounted for prisoner, Jerry Mercado, has left the area of Enfield Connecticut. However, if anyone

does see someone matching his description is urged to contact the Enfield Police Department. Do not approach the subject.
