Kindness Carnival to be Held at Fermi High School

The Friends of Rachel Clubs at Fermi, Enfield High School and Kennedy Middle School are hosting the event Friday for Enfield students in grades pre-K through 5.

Early in the school year, students at the town's three secondary schools formed the Friends of Rachel Club, in honor of Rachel Scott, the first student killed in the Columbine High School massacre in 1999.

The students pledged to uphold the five principles of Rachel's Challenge:

  • Look for the best in others;
  • Dream big;
  • Choose positive influences;
  • Speak with kindness;
  • Start your own chain reaction.

The culmination of the year will be a Kindness Carnival at Fermi High School, involving club members from Enfield High School and John F. Kennedy Middle School. The event will be held Friday, June 14 from 4 to 8 p.m., and is open to all Enfield students in grades pre-K through 5 and their families.

"We have food and many game booths planned, along with a bounce house and giant slide," Fermi assistant principal John Coccia said. "There will be booths for craft making, face painting, and fake tattoos. We will also sell pizza, pretzels, popcorn, cotton candy, and water for $1, and these proceeds will go back into our club accounts to help pay for future programs."

Leading up to the carnival, the pre-K through 5 students have been earning Kindness Coins at their home schools by performing random acts of kindness or showing examples of good character - all virtues of Rachel Scott. The students will be able to use these coins at the carnival to play the games; if they run out of coins, they can purchase more for only 25 cents. All games will only cost one kindness coin/25 cents. As a random act of kindness, the Friends of Rachel Club sent every student in the district their first Kindness Coin.
