LETTER: Consider Synthetic Field Safety In Decision On School Re-Use

An Enfield reader expresses their opinion on the safety of the artificial turf fields at the town's two high schools.

The opinions expressed in this letter are strictly those of the author, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Enfield Patch.

Are synthetic athletic fields safe for children? In January, the Hartford Courant reported that Sen. Richard Blumenthal was calling on the president to authorize a federal study on any potential health risks posed by the recycled rubber used on synthetic athletic field surfaces [Jan. 23, Connecticut, “Blumenthal Seeks Federal Study Of Synthetic Turf Fields”].

The town of Enfield has two recycled rubber athletic field complexes -- one at Enfield High School and the other at Fermi High School.

Two Enfield community conversations, on Feb. 17 and Feb. 24, allow Enfield residents an opportunity to voice their opinions and suggestions for Fermi High School re-use, which will not be a high school starting this fall. Residents are also encouraged to email or call Enfield board of education members with their opinions.

Here’s hoping Enfield residents think to ask a lot of questions about the impact these recycled rubber synthetic surfaces could have on Enfield children before making any decision regarding the re-use of Fermi High.
