Picture Enfield - Then And Now

ENFIELD, CT — In 1989, longtime Enfield resident Monica Lewin Berry utilized her background as an expert seamstress to open Lewin's Bridal at 155 Hazard Ave., in the Hazard Trade Mart. Later, she moved the shop to the Scitico Plaza at 585 Hazard Ave., renaming it Lewin's Boutique. She named the business Lewin's in honor of her father and his strides to make it in America selling clothes.

For a quarter century, Lewin's was among the premier formal wear shops in north-central Connecticut. Not only did the boutique carry an extensive selection of bridal gowns, prom dresses and tuxedo rentals, but Berry designed and custom-made unique outfits to satisfy her patrons.

Due to a family illness, Berry closed the boutique in late 2014, but she continued to ply her skills as an accomplished seamstress with Alterations By Lewin's.

Loving Touch Dog Grooming occupied the former Lewin's space for about a year and a half (shown above), before moving in 2018 into a better location a few doors to the east in the same plaza. The old Lewin's storefront is currently vacant, as seen in this photo taken by me around 8 o'clock this morning.

Last week's trivia answer:
Last week's trivia question was, "Prior to Dunkin' Donuts, the space at 90 Enfield Street had been occupied by a gun shop, and prior to that, had been a salon and day spa for about 15 years. Name that longtime salon." The answer: Picasso's, which occupied a ground-floor spot in the two-story building before closing around 2012. A number of people correctly answered the question, with Malissa Griffith being the first.
