ENFIELD, CT — Today's installment of this weekly Enfield history series, courtesy of the Facebook group Picture Enfield, shows a mid-1970s look at a longtime business on Route 5, Interstate Tire.

The business sold numerous name brand tires, and operated for more than three decades at 79 Enfield Street. For many years, the owners were heavily involved in the Enfield community, sponsoring teams in the Thompsonville Little League. In fact, my 1980 Senior League championship team, depicted below, was sponsored by Interstate Tire. I'm blank on one name, but I see Coach George Young, Jay Mullins, Mike Agro, Eric Lescault, Chip Dyer, Jeff Heiland, Tom Morris, Jim Bourque, John Russotto and Tommy Saso. Ahh, those were the days - long hair (even on me), coaches who didn't have a kid on the team and baseball pants being worn the correct way!

Recent tenants of the building were Acme Auto and Electrical Wholesalers. Here is a photo of the area as it appeared in Aug. 2018, courtesy of the Enfield town assessor's office, which shows Voltage Vape Shop.

Last week's trivia answer:
Last week's trivia question was, "When the Enrico Fermi High School building opened on North Maple Street in 1971, who was the school principal?" The answer: Anthony Torre, who was assisted by House Masters Timothy Connors and Richard Kisiel. After two years at Fermi, Torre was promoted in 1973 to assistant superintendent of schools, a post he held for 39 years before retiring in 2012. Check out page 14 of the 1972 Fermi yearbook, Traces.
