An old photograph and story from Enfield's past and how that site appears today, plus a trivia question.

ENFIELD, CT — Today's installment of this weekly Enfield history series takes a bit of a different approach than usual, as we go back 40 years to page 194 of the 1979 Fermi High School yearbook. For some reason, the editors decided to run ads from competing banks next to each other, both of which have long since disappeared from the town's landscape.

The First National Bank of Enfield was located for many years at 231 Hazard Avenue, at the corner of Elm Street. Over the years, its name has changed numerous times: First National Bank of Connecticut, Savings Bank of Rockville, Rockville Bank, United Bank and, most recently, People's United Bank.

Also depicted is New England Bank & Trust Co. at 9 Hazard Avenue, in front of the former Enfield Suburban Mall and adjacent to the south entrance to Enfield Square. Established in 1971, the bank was open until moving its headquarters to Windsor on June 27, 1988. A Quiznos Sub franchise was located briefly in the eastern side of the building, and was replaced several years ago by a Starbucks coffee shop. A Subway sandwich shop currently occupies the western half of the site.

Last week's trivia answer:
Last week's trivia question was, "The CB radio fad was so huge across the country in the mid-1970s that a novelty song based on its premise hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart in Jan. 1976 (Good God, what were we thinking?). Name the song and artist. The answer: "Convoy" by C.W. McCall, the alias of advertising executive Bill Fries. The novelty tune, written entirely in CB jargon, reached Billboard magazine's top spot on the Hot 100 chart on Jan. 10, 1976. WARNING: If you've just eaten, good buddy, do not - I repeat, DO NOT - hit play on the YouTube video below.

This week's trivia question:
Speaking of banks, there were two Top 15 hit songs released in 1973 containing the word "money" in their titles. One was by a British rock band, and the other by an American R&B group. Name them. Post the answer in the comments section below, or on the Enfield Patch Facebook page.
