Picture Enfield - Then and Now
An old photograph and story from Enfield's past and how that site appears today, plus a trivia question.

ENFIELD, CT — Today's installment of this weekly Enfield history series takes a different approach than the norm, as we look at page 208 of the 1987 Enrico Fermi High School yearbook. On that page are advertisements from eight businesses, none of which exist today.
The eight sponsors depicted are:
- DiMartino's Giant Grinders - Frank DiMartino made huge sandwiches, ranging from 3 to 8 feet, at his small shop in the Riverview Plaza on Elm St.
- Hockey Swap & Shop - a complete line of hockey equipment was carried by Gretchen Griffin in one of the first stores opened in the then-brand new Brookside Plaza in the mid-1980s.
- The Campsite - camping supplies and RV parts were in abundance in the rear portion of 939 Enfield St.
- Elm Barber/Styling Shop - John Iacolino owned this old-fashioned barber shop at 175 Elm St., across the road from Kosciuszko Junior High School (later Asnuntuck Community College).
- Ann Fields Country Pie Restaurant - one of four locations for this tasty spot was at the edge of a small plaza on the northwest corner of Hazard Ave. and Taylor Rd.
- Erika Travel Services - a full service travel agency in a small professional building on Palomba Dr. called Enfield East; the agency later operated out of an office next to Smyth's Ice Cream Stand.
- Benedetto's Florist - formerly in the Riverview Shops at 169 Elm St., Ben Pallotta then moved and operated for many years in the Mountain Laurel Shoppes at 786 Enfield St. You can currently find Ben in the Big Y floral department.
- Eddie's Sporting Goods - Eddie Lapponese was one of the most beloved merchants in the entire town; a generous, gracious man who carried the best collection of sporting equipment in the area.
Here are the eight locations as they appear today, courtesy of Google Maps and the Enfield town assessor's office.

This week's trivia question:
Walking into the Tobacco Valley Teachers Federal Credit Union, I swear I can still smell the fries and sandwiches from the Enfield Dairy Bar. What family owned that longtime institution, which had the greatest milkshakes this side of Shady Glen? Post the answer in the comments section below, or on the Enfield Patch Facebook page.
