Picture Enfield - Then And Now
An old photograph and story from Enfield's past and how that site appears today, plus a trivia question.

ENFIELD, CT — Today's look back at Enfield history recalls the former St. Adalbert School at 90 Alden Ave., which began as a kindergarten in the St. Adalbert Church building. Construction on a separate school building began in 1958 and was completed in Aug. 1959.
Students from kindergarten through eighth grade attended the school until 2006, at which time the K-8 school closed and the St. Adalbert-St. Bernard-St. Martha Preschool opened at the site. That preschool, now called Little Angels Catholic Pre-School, is currently housed on the campus of St. Beranrd Church on Hazard Ave.
For a dozen years, the property stood vacant until Manchester developer William Bellock converted the building into 20 single-bedroom apartments. Here is a look at the imaginatively-named 90 Alden Avenue Apartments today.

Last week's trivia answer:
Last week's trivia question showed this odd curvature in a town sidewalk, constructed around an oak tree which has since been removed, and asked readers to name the street on which it is located. The answer: North Street, which had the Southmeadow/High Meadow neighborhood built in 1986-87. Additional new homes were built on North Street, and according to former Mayor Scott Kaupin, "There are two of these on North Street. One may still have a tree "in the middle". Not sure if the developer or the town put these portions of sidewalks in, but I do recall a conversation with then Public Works Director Jack Kazmarski about these. At that time no one wanted to cut down the big and beautiful oak trees that these sidewalks veered around. If you know the back story, this is pretty unique."

This week's trivia question:
A number of Enfield standouts have played professional sports in the past, but who was the most recent town resident to be drafted by one of the four major pro sports leagues (Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Hockey League or the National Basketball Association)? Post the answer in the comments section below, or on the Enfield Patch Facebook page.
