Preserving Enfield’s Revolutionary Legacy

The Penelope Terry Abbey Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is proud to announce the restoration of the Captain Thomas Abbey Memorial in Enfield, Connecticut.

This important preservation project is being undertaken in partnership with Rogers Memorial of Enfield, Connecticut, who will be carrying out the restoration of the historic memorial. The project is also part of Enfield Celebrates America's 250th, helping commemorate Enfield’s significant role in the founding of our nation as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of American Independence.

Captain Thomas Abbey’s story is one of the cornerstone events highlighted during Enfield’s America 250 celebration, recognizing our community’s proud Revolutionary War heritage.

Captain Thomas Abbey: Answering the Call to Liberty

Captain Thomas Abbey was one of Enfield’s early Revolutionary patriots. On April 20, 1775, after news of the Battles of Lexington and Concord reached Enfield, Abbey—then serving as the town drummer and a lieutenant in the local militia—beat his drum through the streets, calling his fellow citizens to arms.

His alarm rallied Enfield’s volunteers, who marched the following day in defense of liberty. Abbey continued his military service and was promoted to the rank of Captain on January 1, 1777, following distinguished service during both the French and Indian War and the American Revolution.

Preserving His Legacy

Dedicated in 1916, the Captain Thomas Abbey Memorial has honored his service and legacy for more than a century. As stewards of our nation’s history, the Penelope Terry Abbey Chapter, NSDAR, is honored to help preserve this important monument.

With Rogers Memorial undertaking the restoration, this historic landmark will receive the care needed to preserve Captain Abbey’s legacy and ensure that future generations can continue to learn about his service and the sacrifices made in the cause of American independence.

Throughout the restoration, we’ll share updates and photographs as this historic landmark is carefully preserved. We invite our members, friends, neighbors, and the entire community to follow along and celebrate Enfield’s remarkable Revolutionary legacy as we commemorate America 250.
