School Board Votes to End Armed School Guard Program in Enfield Public Schools

The vote Tuesday night reverses the Town Council's approval to continue the program for another two years.

With a 5-3 vote, the Enfield Board of Education approved a motion to remove armed guards from inside the town’s public schools at the end of this school year.

The board vote on Tuesday night to end the memorandum of understanding that would have kept the guards in town schools for another two years, according to The Hartford Courant.

The vote reverses a Town Council decision in April that would have continued the in-school security program that began two years ago — fallout from the December 2012 massacre of 26 students and teachers at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. The council estimated it would cost $782,800 to continue it during the 2015-16 school year.
