Students Graduate from Asnuntuck Community College: PHOTOS

ENFIELD, CT — A total of 318 students earned certificates and degrees, and 220 non-credit certificates were awarded to 212 students at the annual commencement exercises of Asnuntuck Community College Thursday night at Springfield Symphony Hall.

"At Asnuntuck, our academic programs are flourishing; we are producing tomorrow’s educators, social workers, law enforcement officials, accountants, entrepreneurs, skilled technicians, and practitioners as well as many others," college president Jim Lombella said. "We continue to enrich our academic programs to meet our students’ ever-changing needs. Our Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Program continues to lead the way as the “gold star” in manufacturing education in this region. As we move into our new state of the art manufacturing technology center, we look forward to putting more skilled and talented students into our state’s workforce, contributing to the growth of our communities and our regional economy."

Commencement speaker Col. Fred Miclon (Ret.), who graduated from the college 30 years ago, remembered how military-friendly Asnuntuck was at that time and continues to be.

"As a member of the Air National Guard, I also had to contend with frequent training deployments throughout my years at Asnuntuck," Miclon said. "In the roughly eight or so years that I was taking classes, I don’t think there were more than three or four semesters where I did not miss at least a week of class due to my National Guard duties. Fortunately this school has always been very supportive of military service and veteran’s needs."

Stuart Rosenberg, president of Johnson Memorial Medical Center and chairman of the Asnuntuck Community College Foundation, said the college community "is building on its rich traditions to become an innovative Center of Educational Excellence for our region. We are transforming ACC together to lead the way by building the future tomorrows for our current and prospective students."

Student speaker Johanna Connors said, "We are not the same individuals we were when we first attended our classes at Asnuntuck Community College. We have grown intellectually, as individuals, and as a community. Some of us were shy while others were more sociable during the first few weeks. As time has gone by, friendships have been built and those who were shy, became sociable. Many individuals came together to bring an awareness to student concerns, issues on campus, the community and government. At Asnuntuck, we were able to learn, but also feel as if we are part of a family. I would say that the positive environment on campus will be one of the many things that we will miss most from Asnuntuck."
