Summer College of Technology for Teens Program at ACC
ACC Offers Free Program for Teens. The program is available to male and female students either entering or just completing 7th or 8th grade.
Asnuntuck Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center has announced that for the fifth year they will be offering their free Summer College of Technology for Teens program. The program is available to male and female students either entering or just completing 7th or 8th grade. Students will learn the various steps in manufacturing, while having a hands-on experience creating a take-home project for themselves. The teens will have their face scanned and reproduced on a 3-D printer, they will use SolidWorks to design, then 3-D print a metal framework. They will also mill a baseplate. They will learn about electronics when they assemble and solder electrical components which will enable their final project to light up.
There will be two sessions offered. The first is July 11th-July 15th, with the second being offered July 18th-July 22nd. Both sessions run from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Rita Moriarty, who is overseeing the program, said students will be able to watch the progress of their scanned heads being printed during the first two days of class. They will mill the base of the box on day one. During the second day they will work on SolidWorks, with the third day centered-around the electronics portion of the project. On day four, the students will work with the waterjet where they will produce the designs they have selected, which could include their name, cut-outs of a slice of pizza or a sailboat and the initials ACC. The fifth day will be dedicated to completing the project and will include a celebratory pizza party.
Two students that have gone through the program will be back on campus to serve as teacher’s aides.
