Supporting Student Well-Being Through Respectful Dialogue and Accurate Information

At the January 13 Enfield Board of Education meeting, Board member Dean Gousse raised a concern based on a conversation with a student regarding the use of shared restroom spaces in Enfield’s public schools. The student reported feeling discomfort following an encounter in a shared restroom and sought clarity about how current district policies apply.

Connecticut law affirms that all students are entitled to equal access to education regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Schools are required to allow transgender and gender-diverse students to use restrooms consistent with their gender identity, while also providing single-user restroom options to any student who seeks additional privacy. We believe Enfield Public Schools adheres to these legal requirements and implements these protocols consistently across all district buildings to ensure a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for every student. This framework is designed to balance dignity, inclusion, and individual comfort.

While PFLAG Enfield notes that established Board procedures were not followed in how this concern was raised, we also recognize that the resulting discussion has created an opportunity. It encourages parents and caregivers to listen more closely to their children’s voices, ask thoughtful questions, and engage more deeply with the policies and supports already in place within the district. We encourage that future conversations on complex and sensitive topics follow established procedures, ensuring that dialogue remains constructive, respectful, and centered on the best interests of all parties involved.
